Companies that buy Claude through Google Cloud now have a second way to run it. In a blog post dated October 23, Google Cloud announced general availability of Claude Models on Google Cloud (Anthropic managed), a version of Anthropic's service that Anthropic itself operates on Google's infrastructure. Anthropic logged the launch in its developer release notes a day earlier, describing it as the Claude API run by Anthropic and reached through a customer's Google Cloud project.

The practical difference is who handles the data and how fast new features arrive. Under the new option Anthropic acts as the data processor under its own commercial terms, and customers get Claude Platform tools the day they ship, including Claude Managed Agents in beta, skills and code execution. Anthropic's notes add that the faster serving mode it offers for Claude Opus 5.5 can be switched on in this setup as well. Access still runs through Google Cloud IAM, activity is recorded in Cloud Audit Logging and charges land on the customer's Google Cloud bill through Marketplace, counting toward eligible spending commitments.

The older Google-managed route is not going away. In that setup Google Cloud remains the data processor under existing customer agreements and offers VPC Service Controls, customer-managed encryption keys and data residency in the US, the EU and Asia-Pacific, along with links to services such as BigQuery and Model Armor. New Claude platform features reach it only after Google integrates them. Google says both versions get new Claude models on release day at the same prices, so the choice comes down to governance requirements versus feature speed.

Michael Gerstenhaber, a vice president of product management at Google Cloud, wrote the post. According to the post, the current lineup available through either route includes Opus 5.5, the smaller Haiku 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, plus Claude Fable 5.1.

The move fits a broader pattern of cloud providers loosening their grip on how partner models are served. Anthropic already runs a similar Anthropic-operated offering on Amazon's cloud, which its release notes call Claude Platform on AWS. Earlier this week Gerstenhaber also announced that OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud, underlining Google's push to present its platform as a neutral marketplace even as it sells its own Gemini models.

For enterprises the trade-off is real. Teams that want Anthropic's newest agent tooling without waiting can now keep procurement, identity and billing inside Google Cloud. Regulated customers that need Google as processor, regional residency guarantees or customer-managed keys will likely stay on the Google-managed path. Google's post does not say whether residency, encryption key or private networking controls will come to the Anthropic-managed option later, and neither company published pricing differences beyond saying list prices match.
