Google is giving its Gemini assistant in the car access to the personal information people already keep in Google's apps. In a blog post on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Gemini senior product manager Karan Daryanani said Personal Intelligence is rolling out starting that day on Android Auto, with support for cars that have Google built-in to follow in the coming months. Google also said Gemini itself is now available globally on both platforms.
Personal Intelligence is an opt-in setting that, once switched on, lets Gemini pull from Workspace apps such as Gmail and Google Calendar, as well as Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search. Google describes two jobs for it: finding a specific detail, such as a booking in an email or a place saved in Maps, and combining several sources to answer a more involved question. In a car, the pitch is that drivers can ask in plain speech instead of handling a phone.
The examples Google gives are everyday errands. A driver heading to the airport can ask for the flight gate and whether the flight is on time in one request, with Gemini reading the confirmation email and checking the status. Someone can say "take me to my doctor's appointment" without knowing the address, ask for a vegetarian-friendly indoor restaurant along the route, or ask Gemini to navigate to a car wash that appears in a photo taken the week before.
Privacy controls are central to how Google presents the launch. No apps are connected until the user turns the setting on, it can be switched off at any time in Gemini settings, and people who already enabled Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app carry that choice into the car. In cars with Google built-in, personalized answers appear only while the owner's phone is connected. Without the feature, navigation, music, calls and general questions keep working, just without tailored answers.
The rollout is narrower than the word "globally" suggests. Google says Personal Intelligence is reaching eligible personal Google accounts held by people aged 18 or over, not Workspace business, enterprise or education accounts, and it is not offered in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Switzerland or anywhere in the European Economic Area.
The update builds on a gradual expansion of Gemini on the road. The Verge notes that Google brought Gemini to Android Auto last year and to cars with Google built-in in April, and that carmakers such as Volvo, Polestar, Ford, GM, Honda and Nissan sell newer models with Google built-in. Adding personal context moves the assistant from answering general questions to acting on a driver's own schedule, messages and saved places, an area where Google can draw on services that rival in-car assistants do not control.
Google has not published data on how accurate the feature is in the car, how it handles ambiguous requests, or whether it reduces the time drivers spend looking at screens. It also gave no date for when cars with Google built-in will receive the update.
